The beginnngs of the Royal Castle in Warsaw dates back to the 14th century when the Wieza Wielka, which is now called the Wieza Grodzka, was built.

The Royal Castle, being expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries, obtained the shape of a closed pentagon during the reign of Zygmunt lll Waza. It was the royal residence, the seat of the Sejm, the administrative and cultural centre. In the mid-seventeenth century, during the wars with Sweeden, it was destroyed, but during the reign of the House of Wettin, the castle gradually regained its former glory. Thanks to the artists employed by Stanislaw August, the interiors of the chambers were rebuilt and two new apartments were created: the Grand Apartment and the Royal Apartment.
