Triceratops was a species of medium size herbivore dinosaurs which first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the Cretaceious period, about 68-65 millions ago. Large quantity of fossils have been revealed since 1887, however, it was mistakenly considered as North American Long Horn Bison at the early stage of its discovery.
The most iconic characteristic of Triceratops is that it bears a large bony frill and three horns on its large four legged body. The function of the frills and three distinctive facial horns has long inspired debate, as traditionally these have been viewed as defensive weapons against predators, but recent theories nothing that these features were primarily used in identification, courtship and dominance displays.
